Tooth Loss Associated with Dementia: Study

dreamstime_xs_18759769.jpgMissing teeth can make everyday life tough in several ways. Besides increasing the risk of TMJ disorder, tooth loss brings social stigmas. It also creates chewing difficulties which force people to give up their favorite foods. Unfortunately, this latter problem can result in even bigger issues; in fact, new research indicates that missing teeth can lead to cognitive problems down the road.

A Significant Link

Swedish researchers have found that chewing problems can increase a person’s risk of developing cognitive issues later on in life. In conducting their study, the research team looked closely at 500 people who were all in their seventies. In the end, they found that subjects were far more likely to develop dementia if they had difficulty consuming solid food due to tooth loss. In fact, the study was so conclusive; it showed that a person’s risk advanced substantially based on how many teeth he or she had lost.

Reducing Risk

Tooth loss can happen for several different reasons; that said, whatever the cause, the consequences are almost always severe. Fortunately, modern dental implants allow people to regain full chewing function, even if they’ve lost several teeth.

When people have missing teeth replaced with dental implants, they are able to lower their risk of developing TMJ disorder. They also regain the freedom to enjoy the foods they used to love. By eating a complete diet chock full of lean meats and fibrous vegetables, patients can also lower their risk of potential medical problems related to tooth loss. Finally, they are also able to sidestep the unpleasant social stigmas associated with missing teeth.
