How PRF Helps Dental Implants

At The Durham Office, we are constantly working to stay at the forefront of dental techniques. One of the techniques we have recently added is the use of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) to help your dental implants heal. Studies of this approach show that it can significantly help your implants integrate during the early healing period, when they might be most vulnerable.

But you don’t have to understand how PRF works to know that we are dentists you can trust to achieve the great results you’re looking for.

PRF Helps Dental Implants

What Is PRF?

PRF is a concentration of some of your body’s natural healing mechanisms. We create it by taking a sample of your blood that we then separate in a centrifuge. This concentrates the healing factors that we can then apply at the implant site. This helps the body build its basic scaffolding for the bone that will hold the implant in place.

Thanks to the PRF, the body can build bone faster. This helps the body during the critical early weeks when it is trying to create a sturdy connection to the implant.

Scientific Evidence

PRF improves implant stability, which can be seen in a study that compares implants placed with PRF against those that were placed without it. Researchers placed more than 40 implants in 20 patients, randomly putting PRF with half of the implants. They then used resonance frequency measurements to determine the stability of the implants at one week and one month after placement–charting the critical period for implant integration. The study showed that after one week, the implant stability quotient (ISQ) for the PRF implants was 69.3, compared to 64.5 for the implants placed without PRF. Then, at the end of one month, the PRF implants had an ISQ of 77.1, compared to just 70.5 for the implants without PRF.

Over the course of the early healing period, the PRF helps the implants grow more stable faster than implants without PRF. This helps implants get past the period where half of all implant failures occur (around 1% of implants fail to bond with bone).

Implant Dentists at the Leading Edge

We understand that for many of our patients, looking at the above gives you a terrible impression of alphabet soup, but without the tasty broth. However, what you really need to understand is this: PRF is an exciting advanced technology that lets us improve the odds for some of our patients who might be at risk of having an implant not integrate.

We constantly use our expertise and our connections with some of the most advanced dentists in the world to always remain at the leading edge of dental technology.
