A recent study suggests that workplace bullying is not unlike the kind we typically associated with middle school or high school: unattractive or neurotic individuals are more likely to be socially shunned and even bullied.
Attractiveness and Counterproductive Work Behavior (CWB)
Previously, no one had linked attractiveness to CWB, but in the last month two studies have been released showing how close the link between them is.
In the study, published in the journal Human Performance, researchers surveyed 114 workers at a health care facility, asking them how often their co-workers treated them cruelly. Examples of cruel behavior included saying hurtful things, making fun of them, or treating them rudely. Digital photos of each employee were then given to people who did not know the employees to be rated in terms of attractiveness. The results showed that people who were rated less attractive were more likely to suffer bullying.
The study also looked at personality traits that might elicit responses in coworkers and found that negative personality traits such as anxiety tended to lead to more bullying, while being agreeable, friendly, and outgoing tended to reduce bullying.
Your Smile Will Affect How You Are Treated
This study highlights again the significant impact of your appearance on your life. Your smile is an important part of your personal appearance. It’s often the first thing people will judge about you, and if it makes you look unattractive or old, it may lead to negative responses from your coworkers.
In addition, if you are self-conscious about your smile, causing you to act anxious or to be more withdrawn, it will also contribute to negative responses from your coworkers.
